Bernie Wrightson was an American artist and illustrator who was best known for his work in the horror and fantasy genres. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1948 and began his career as an artist in the late 1960s.
Wrightson was known for his detailed and intricate pen-and-ink drawings, which were characterized by their dark, macabre themes and attention to detail. His work was heavily influenced by the horror movies and comic books of his youth, and he often drew inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Stephen King.
Wrightson's most famous work was his illustrated version of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," which was first published in 1983. The book was a critical and commercial success and is widely regarded as one of the greatest illustrated works of the horror genre.
In addition to his work on "Frankenstein," Wrightson also illustrated a number of other horror and fantasy books, including "Cycle of the Werewolf" by Stephen King and "The Stand: Captain Trips" by Marvel Comics.
